Kerala has always traded with the Arabs, more than with other nations. Historians almost unanimously agree that Arab trade ships, from distant ports of the Red Sea and the Persian Bay, have been coming to the Malabar Coast since the early centuries of the first millennium BCE to acquire products like pepper and cardamom (Panikar 1957:52). It was the rare collection of spices and jewels as well as of hill products and animals, that drew the Arab traders to Kerala. The Arab world has had trade relations with Kerala since time immemorial. ![]()
